What are the effects of COVID-19 on global poverty? ‘Two main effects of COVID-19 on global poverty, first, an increase in global poverty. Second, providing us with an awareness that global poverty was higher than we thought it was.’ Advised, Dr Lucio Esposito, Associate Professor Development Economics at East Anglia University, on 29 April 2020.
He highlights, ‘The World Bank has estimated that in 2020 due to COVID-19 it is going to be the first year, since 1998, where there will be an increase in the number of people below the poverty line.’
‘COVID-19 has caused those people in the informal economy to turn to the government, to charities, to INGOs because they have no way of making a living anymore. This is making us realise entire pockets of poverty were present in a society which we had no ideas about.’ Thank you Dr Lucio Esposito.
